Aggieland Shines as NCAA Tournament Host

04/11/2023

College Station played host to NCAA postseason basketball on March 17-19, when A&M, Arkansas, Dayton and Albany competed for the right to advance to the Sweet 16 in the Raleigh Region. The hometown Aggies eventually won, squeaking past Arkansas in a 61-59 thriller. The game provided a fitting finale to all the hard work Miller and his large team of volunteers put in to host the event. The group coordinated everything, from seating and arranging team hotels to extensive media relations and behind-the-scene organization.

Aggieland has played host to NCAA championships in swimming, indoor track, soccer, volleyball, tennis, golf and baseball, among others, and the local community was again on fine display with postseason basketball in town. Hoops fans in Bryan-College Station purchased more tickets than all but one of the 15 other opening weekend sites. Saturday’s opening round of games drew 6,407, and Monday night-despite a late start time of 8:30p.m.-was attended by 6,185. Only Notre Dame drew bigger crowds, and A&M blew away attendance numbers from places like Bridgeport, Conn. (4,372) and College Park, Md. (4,857) where higher-seeded teams played close to home.
